Tampa Palms, Westchase, Carrollwood and Tampa Bay Real Estate News From Jeanne Prigitano

Well, it’s getting to be that time of year again. The official hurricane season starts June 1 and it may be time to start thinking about flood insurance. There is a 30-day waiting period for it to go into effect, so now is the time to sign up.

I know you have all heard that flood insurance is expensive. If you are in a high risk flood zone, it can get expensive but you are required to have it should there be a mortgage on your house. If you are not in a high risk area, and are not required to have flood insurance, you may still want to consider purchasing a policy. It’s flat here in Florida. Tropical storms and hurricanes pose flood risks even in low risk areas. If you experience damage because of flooding, your regular homeowner’s policy will not cover flood damage.

I am considered to be in a non-flood zone (low risk of flooding) and I just purchased a policy for $365 a year. More than 85 insurance companies in nearly 21,000 participating communities nationwide offer flood policies.

FEMA offers more flood insurance on a dedicated website, www.FloodSmart.gov. Homeowners can also call directly to (800) 427-2419.
